Medicare Supplements Insurance Information
Medicare provides essential coverage for medical expenses. However, it doesn’t cover everything. Many beneficiaries find that out-of-pocket costs such as copayments, deductibles and coinsurance can add up quickly.
Medicare Supplement insurance, also called Medigap plans, helps bridge the gap between what Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) covers and what you are responsible for paying. Medigap policies are standardized, which means that a plan of the same letter (such as Plan F or Plan G) offers the same coverage regardless of the insurance company that sells it.
Types of Medicare Supplement Plans
Medicare Supplement plans are identified by lettered names—Plan A, Plan B, Plan C and so on. Each plan provides a different level of coverage, though they all help cover out-of-pocket costs related to Medicare.
Medigap plans may provide the following coverage, depending on the plan you choose:
- Part A coinsurance and hospital costs
- Part B coinsurance or copayment
- Blood (the first three pints)
- Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
- Emergency or unexpected health care needs when traveling outside of the United States
Every plan covers different costs, so it’s essential to review the benefits of each plan to find the one that best meets your needs.
Keep in mind that Medigap plans don’t cover everything—such as prescription drugs, vision and long-term care—but they can provide crucial financial protection, especially as health care needs increase with age.
When to Enroll in a Medigap Plan
The best time to enroll in a Medigap plan is during your Medigap open enrollment period, which is a six-month window that begins when you turn 65 and are enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this period, you have guaranteed issue rights, which means you can’t be denied coverage or charged higher premiums based on your health status.
If you try to enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan after your open enrollment period, insurers can use medical underwriting to determine whether to accept your application and how much to charge. This can make it more difficult or expensive to get coverage.
